Projects Rwanda ReGeneration Music

ReGenMusic_theory_lessonAug09The ReGeneration Music Centre was founded by two talented volunteers, Amy Stead and David Wald, both trained musicians and teachers. They teach guitar, piano, flute, drumming and singing lessons. The school also has a choir and band, with students of all ages drawing on Rwandese, African and Western music traditions.

They also offer band sessions and music theory, aural awareness and song writing classes to complement the practical training. Only after Amy and David began the music school did the find out it was the first one, ever, in Rwanda.

The programme will enable the students to receive practical tuition and support, whilst building their confidence and self esteem through individual and community development activities.

ReGenMusic_singing_lessonAug09ReGeneration intends to build relationships within the wider community in Kigali and beyond by offering music outreach classes, concerts and workshops for those who are interested.

Over 70 LC students have jumped at the opportunity to learn and play instruments and 33 students have already formed a choir, coached by Amy and David.

The long term aim of the ReGeneration Music Centre is to train Rwandan teachers so that the project will become self sustaining and create income generating, employment and social opportunities for the community.

Amy and David are also starting to work with the widows and orphans of Solace Ministries creating choirs made up of vulnerable children and widows.

ReGenMusic_practising_guitarAug09We are keen to encourage the participating widows to write poetry about their lives or experiences, or anything they would like and then we plan to set the lyrics to music that will be written by the LC students.

This is a fantastic and dynamic way to encourage these groups to learn new and pass down skills and interact with each other, to instil confidence and to discover new talent.

We hope that one day these choirs will tour internationally in order to share their amazing traditional musical talents, raise awareness about the Genocide and to generate funding to sustain and develop ReGeneration.

David and Amy are also keen to provide music workshops to Street Children and child prostitutes in Kigali.

Please help the ReGeneration Music Centre reach its full potential by donating.
