Projects Rwanda Multi-Learning Centre

UgandaChadRw478There is a great demand, especially among young Rwandans, to learn to speak English. Sadly, in many parts of Africa, the best jobs are with international non-governmental organisations, and a knowledge of English is a great advantage in seeking work.

It is also essential to speak English to continue in school and to go to university. There are virtually no text books published in the local language, Kinyarwanda, so many secondary and college-level course are taught in English.

In September 2009 Network for Africa set up the Rwanda Multi-Learning Centre in Rwanda's capital, Kigali, offering students ranging from the ages of 18 -45 free English language education, as well as IT skills and other life skills.

We have four teachers and about 120 students, ranging in ability from absolute beginners to students who were verging on fluent. All of the students are eager to learn, with some walking as much as 10km (about 7.5 miles) a day to attend one three-hour lesson.

Students receive a certificate of completion at the end of the 6 month level course, and their skills are in demand from local businesses. Many students continue to university, where English language is essential. We encourage donors to sponsor students through their university studies.

With generous donations from supporters, we have purchased new books and other educational resources to encourage the students to continue with their English. We also have computers on which students develop their IT skills. In addition we offer training in writing job applications and CVs/resumes, and give coaching in going through job interviews.
